Why all black?
Symbolic for funerals, black is considered a colour worn for mourning. However, millennials have altered the meaning of wearing the all black attire to a simple “we wear all black just because we want to”. All black can be considered slimming, chic, sophisticated, classy, clean, worn to blend in and even worn to stand out. The all black truly has many meanings to the outfit. And what’s more, it looks great on any skin tone, any hair colour, any body shape and any gender. And it can potentially save you money as let’s face it, black goes with everything!
Tell me the negatives 🧐
With any outfit there will be negatives or at least some sort of constructive criticism. Let’s face it, not everyone appreciates the all black look. But why is this? There are a few people who hate the all black look. To them it’s dull, too gothic, lacks originality, a cop out. But I simply disagree (sorry guys). My female work colleagues often wear black at work and it often highlighted that that is the ONLY colour we wear. Hmmmm not quite. But to be realistic, black, to many, can look great so long as you follow some rules.
The key tips 👌🏽
1. Season appropriateness - Make sure the all black material is season appropriate. A black woollen dress will look great in Autumn or Winter but out of place in summer. Plus black absorbs the sun so you may find yourself too hot in black clothing during the summer months.
2. Vary the textures - nothing looks more dull than an all black cotton outfit (cotton top and cotton leggings like you’re wearing pyjamas or a matching textured black top and trouser like a bouncer 😒). For women, a black pleated skirt and a black lace or sheer top can look stylish. And for men, a black leather jacket, black tee and black denim ripped jeans can look hot.
3. Vary the shades of black - different shades of black can break up a look and give it texture. Get the right fit - less of drowning in clothes and instead go for more fitted options. However at times a draped look can look great if is styled correctly.
4. Accessories - the clothes may be black but the accessories don’t have to be. Be bold with coloured shoes or statement accessories to give the outfit some edge.
5. Makeup - yes ladies colour them lips. A pop of colour on your face, be it red lipstick for example, compliments the all black outfit so well.
All this being said can we say we in for all black outfits or shall we leave them for funerals? Would love to hear your comments below 👇🏽
